Q: I have to "babysit" my dog for a little over 4 months and I live in an apartment. She's an older dog and has to "go to the bathroom" a lot, but me and my husband both work. We got the idea to put sod (grass) on the patio and install a doggy door. Should we just lay the sod or put some potting soil underneath?
A: We tried this as well, but put the sod (without potting soil) in a large plastic bin and trained the dogs to go there. The drawback is that it is very, very heavy and can be quite messy. After that experiment, we found a really great product called a "Potty Box" which is basically the same thing, except its turf and it drains into a lined drawer underneath and you just have to pick up the poo on top and change the paper out in the drawer. Here's the website for it, and a few others to get an idea. Type in: potty box for dogs" in google and see what else comes up. http://www.porchpotty.com/index.html http://www.iwannapetpatch.com/ http://doggysolutions.com/index.htm
