Why do my plants look so bad?

Q: On the side of my house I have 2 hyacinths and 2 lilacs that i bought as basically a stick with root. Now they look like someone torched the ends of the leaves! The same with my October Glory Maple tree. It's a gorgeous tree, but the leaves are brown around the edges. Also, beetles were eating my weeping pussy willow tree and its not looking too healthy... I am not a gardener so any help is appreciated! Thanks! I am in the southeast (zone 8 i think) so we dont frost too often! also, i thought hyacinths were supposed to have a cold season before they bloom? and I didnt even know they had a bulb.... i bought it as a stick with root!!

A: Well, you are right--hyacinths are bulbs which down in the south, need at least six weeks of refrigeration before they're planted around January. I don't know what you got when you bought a stick with a root, but I don't think you bought a hyacinth. Lilacs don't grow down here either (I'm in zone 9), so that's probably why it's not doing well. The leaves turning brown around the edges on your Maple tree is a normal occurrence during the hot summer days we've had. It's also getting ready to go dormant and will lose all its leaves, so don't worry about that. Beetles eating your pussy willow? I would use a good general purpose insecticide, preferably one with an organic component such as pyrethrins or neem oil. It also will drop its leaves, so don't spend too much time spraying the foliage. I hope this helps you and good luck with your plants.
