Q: I bought some 1" MDF (1" actual thickness) for a workbench top. The size is 28" by 8' long. I put a 2x4 support (with legs) at 4'. Is this going to hold up over time? Do I need to add some plywood or additional bracing underneath? BTW, I do plan on installing a 50lb. vise on this workbench. Also, what can I use to seal it? Any relevant advice or experiences would be helpful. Thanks!

A: If this was me, I'd probably run some support underneath the MDF between your existing supports. I'd put some 2x4 on edge underneath and attach to the supports you have now. As for sealing, many woodworkers just put a 1/4" hardboard on top. The hardboard is somewhat harder than MDF and is sacrificial. You just screw it to the MDF and when it gets too banged up, you just remove and replace.
