Loft conversion..can I rig a light from the bedroom light fitting in to my loft?

Q: The bedroom is direct underneath the loft & i can access the light fittings easy, I`m thinking on rigging from the bedroom light direct in to my loft & also fixing an on/off switch, the max light bulb would be 60W..any advice would be helpful, thanks. Thanks William, Am I right in thinking the new wire would hve to go direct to the main fuse box? I`m only going to use the loft for storage, but maybe use it as a living space later on..thanks for your valuable advice.

A: Mick, There are several considerations that we don't know. What else is on this circuit? If you try to put a whole additional room on this circuit get ready for nuisance breaker trips. Does both the supply wire and the switch wire run to this junction? If so you can tap the circuit. If not and it is only a pre-switched line you cannot. And then there is that pesky thing about the NEC (National Electrical Code). It now requires arc fault breakers in all bedrooms. If you sleep in the loft you will need to comply. When you go to sell, it will be caught by the inspector and it will have to be brought up to code after the walls are closed and all your do-it-yourself savings go out the window. You will also have minimum wall receptical quantity and distance requirements to meet. Good luck Craig
